A new study published by the European Environment Agency (EEA) explores how much grazing livestock is needed to maintain and restore Europe’s semi-natural habitats. Drawing on habitat data and expert knowledge from across Europe, the study estimates appropriate grazing levels for different habitat types and considers how many grazing animals may be needed to achieve nature conservation objectives.
The findings highlight the crucial role of extensive grazing systems in maintaining biodiversity-rich landscapes, while also showing that grazing requirements vary considerably between habitats, regions and conservation goals.
